Case Study with Lucy Tidbury

by Andy Farrer

Lucy Tidbury is an artist in Purbeck who specialises in farm theamed art, inspired by the Purbeck countryside and landscapes. We have worked together on a number of projects including photographing and reproducing her “Moo Selfie” range of paintings.

Lucy recently opened a shop in Swanage where she sells her Orginal Farm Art and gifts including her hand crafted stone Cow themed Cheese-Boards, Coasters and Placemats. She also reproduces her images from the photographed originals to print onto her Cow Mugs, Tea Towels, Greeting Cards as well as the Signed Prints.

We first produced some sample prints last year before Fine Art Inkorporated had been set up, (when Andy had a pre-production Canon image PROGRAF PRO-2000, which was on loan from Canon, to provide some user feedback on their new flagship printer range) We printed some of Lucy’s Moo Selfies on some slightly textured NST Bright White fine art paper and it was the perfect match for her work. As her originals are painted with oil on canvas the texture of the canvas is recorded in the photograph. When this is printed the impression of the texture is apparent and printing onto a more heavily textured paper was over-the-top. Fotospeed NST Bright White is one of our “Specialist & Archival” papers.

Lucy was keen to kick things up a notch, so sourcing top of the range prints was a natural progression. The NST Bright White is an archival paper, approved by the Fine Art Trade Guild. The paper is a heavy-weight (315gsm) paper, manufactured from cotton, rather than cheap wood pulp, and therefor is a “fibre-based” product which looks and feels wonderful. The 12 colour ink set used in our Canon printers are class-leading pigment inks, which are also archival, so Lucy can rest assured that her prints will stand the test of time and her Moos can be enjoyed for generations to come in their new homes.

We bond Lucy’s prints to acid free backing board in house, so they remain perfectly flat. All she has to do is position and sign her mount and wrap it up.

Our latest project together was reproducing her most recent piece onto a deep box canvas. Customers in her shop have been surprised to discover it isn’t the original as the reproduction is so good. A canvas is a great option as a “ready to hang” purchase and well suited to bright homes, where reflections on glazed frames can be distracting. Our canvas prints are printed on a poly-cotton canvas, varnished with a protective museum grade UV varnish and stretched onto responsibly sourced, solid pine stretcher bars.

“Print Sales have improved and feedback from my customers is very complimentary” says Lucy. “We are very excited about the new canvas options, as ready to hang pieces are always popular.”
